First There Was CCLI
Most churches have now heard of CCLI (Christian Copyright Licensing, Inc.), and thousands of churches have signed up for the convenience it offers those who make use of copyrighted music in their worship services. Churches that use more contemporary and Praise & Worship songs have found CCLI most helpful. But not all publishers have signed up with CCLI. Recently two other licensing agencies have been established.
New Dawn Music began in 1991 to serve those in the more liturgical traditions with "a broader and more easily accessible body of music for liturgical prayer." It originated as a cooperative venture between Catholic Oregon Press (COP) and North American Liturgy Resources (NALR) and is now the exclusive licensing agent for many titles published by the St. Louis Jesuits, Michael Joncas, and Tom Conry among others. For information write New Dawn Music, PQ Box 13248, Portland, OR 97213-0248; or call (800) 243-3296.
LicenSing—Copyright Cleared Music for Churches was established in 1993. It hopes to fill the niche "for the mainstream ecumenical church." The Canada-based organization has already signed up many publishers in Australia, Canada, and the United States. The editors come from those three countries: Robin Mann (Australia), Alan C Whitmore (Canada), and Paul Westermeyer (United States). For information on LicenSing in Canada write: Wood Lake Books, Inc., RQ Box 700, Winfield, BC V0H 2C0; or call (800) 663-2775. In the United States write: Logos Productions, Inc., P.O. Box 240, South St. Paul, MN 55075-0240; or call (612) 451-9945 or (800) 328-0200.
CRC Publications, the publisher of Reformed Worship and the Psalter Hymnal, has been affiliated with CCLI for several years and has now also signed up with LicenSing. We get regular reports (and royalties) from CCLI. The two songs from the Psalter Hymnal used most often by churches in the past year were "Take My Life That It May Be" (PsH 289) with 331 requests and "Alabare" (PsH 234) with 131 requests.
Institute for Worship Studies
Robert Webber, noted author of several books on worship and editorial consultant for Reformed Worship, recently announced the formation of The Institute for Worship Studies, a leadership training school.
The Institute is the only institution in the United States specifically designed with worship in mind. Its mission is to promote a renewal of worship among God's people within the local church, regardless of denomination or affiliation. To fulfill this mission the institute offers training for pastors, music ministers, church leaders, and others through academically respectable and highly applicable courses of study.
Five different programs of study range from a small group curriculum to a D.Min. program. The programs are structured around correspondence courses to allow maximum flexibility. Each program includes one-on-one instruction from college- and seminary-level professors and church leaders who personally review and interact with submitted work. For a brochure, write The Institute for Worship Studies, PQ Box 894, Wheaton, IL 60189-0894; (708) 510-8905.
COLAM 95
Plan now to attend a major Conference on Liturgy and Music (COLAM) cosponsored by Reformed Worship and the Calvin College Department of Music, on July 17-21, 1995 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The conference will be held in coordination with the Calvin Alumni Association program "Summerfest," a five-day family "learning vacation" that includes educational and recreational programs for adults and children.
COLAM 95 will celebrate the release of three major products currently near-ing completion. The Psalter Hymnal Handbook will contain background information on all the songs in the 1987 Psalter Hymnal. Lift Up Your Hearts will provide resources for planning, conducting, and evaluating worship; it is intended for use by worship committees and worship planning teams (see p. 38 for a sample chapter). Songs for LiFE, a new children's hymnal, will be published in two editions—one for children and another for leaders.
Previous COLAM conferences (held every four years in different locations) have been for adults only. But this one will be for the whole family. Make your plans now to attend!
