"It's Tuesday and I still don't know what hymns we're going to sing on Sunday! I don't even have the text or sermon topic. How am I supposed to choose organ music that will integrate with the service"?"
Just then the phone rings. It's the pastor, and he's chosen his text. He's selected some hymns too, although he's still not sure which stanzas to sing.
"Oh well, at least I can choose the prelude, postlude, and offertory. I'll work on the hymns later—after he decides about the stanzas."
I go to my dresser drawers where I keep all my music and start the weekly hunt.
"Let's see, I think I have a piece based on this hymn—that might work for a prelude. But where did I put it? Oh, here's one that would be perfect, but there's no way I can get it in shape by Sunday; I'll have to work on that later and hope it fits in again sometime. "
I open another drawer, sifting through stacks of music.
"When I didn't have so much music to choose from, I just played the same pieces more often. Now that I have a dresser full, it's harder and harder to remember just what I do have. Here I go again."
After an hour of hunting, the floor is full. I'm sitting in the middle of a pile of books, trying to find just the right combination of pieces to fit perfectly into this week's service. And the bulletin information is due tomorrow.. . .
Sound familiar? If you're an organist, it probably does. Sometimes the hardest part of the organist's job is not preparing for Sunday but deciding what to prepare.
In hopes of making that task a bit easier, REFORMED WORSHIP asked Joan Ringerwole, professor of organ and church music at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, to work on a bibliography of organ music based on hymn tunes in both the forthcoming new edition of the Psalter Hymnal and in the recently released Rejoice in the Lord.
All the tune names in the Psalter Hymnal (PH) and Rejoice in the Lord (RL) will be listed in alphabetical order, followed by hymn title, composer, publisher, and a letter that will tell you whether the piece is easy, medium, or difficult (E, M, D). We worked by tune names rather than hymn titles, since different texts are sometimes sung to the same tune. In your hymnal you will find tune names both on the page with each hymn and in the tune index in the back of the book.
CRC Publications hopes to publish a complete organists' bibliography shortly after the new Psalter Hymnal is released. We wanted to give readers a glimpse of our work in its early stages— both to let you know what is coming and to solicit your reactions. We hope this resource will help organists in their task of choosing music that integrates with other parts of the service.
